At the moment, the Philadelphia Phillies are entering Spring Training with a bit of an “open competition” set to take place at the center fielder position. Adam Haseley and Scott Kingery appear to be in the lead, with Roman Quinn set to push them with his elite speed.

Even someone like Odubel Herrera appears set to get an honest look this spring, for better or for worse.

While that all sounds great on paper, there’s a half-decent chance that none of the above mentioned names do enough over the next couple of weeks to land the position on an everyday basis. If that ends up being the case, Dombrowski might have to circle back to his former center fielder from Boston.

Prior to J.T. Realmuto and Didi Gregorius signing back with Philly, a lot of people actually had the Phillies as a top landing spot for Jackie Bradley Jr. They needed an everyday center fielder, and there was of course the connection between JBJ and Dombrowski.

While the payroll has obviously tightened up quite a bit for the Phillies since the early stages of the offseason, JBJ signing a one-year deal to come in and compete with a Phillies squad set to push for the postseason isn’t an outlandish idea.
