2021 cap hit: $15.75 million

This may feel counterproductive seeing as the Philadelphia Eagles literally just acquired Darius Slay, and cornerback remains one of the team’s biggest weaknesses  – but I wouldn’t rule it out.

If the Eagles were to trade Slay this offseason, they would save approximately $6 million towards the 2021 salary cap. Considering the state of the team at the moment, and the fact that Slay just turned 30, I’d bet a lot of money that Howie at least considers it.

Acquired via trade last offseason, Slay was brought in to finally stabilize the Eagles shaky cornerback situation. Roseman gladly handed over a third round pick to the Detroit Lions, and then immediately made Slay one of the highest paid CBs in the NFL. While Slay was undoubtedly the Eagles best CB this past season, he in all honestly underperformed compared to what everyone was expecting.

He recorded just one interception, and his allowed passer rating when targeted was 111.9 – by far the worst number of his professional career.

My guess is not many teams are lining up to take on Slay’s $15+ million salary, and that any sort of hypothetical trade offer wouldn’t be worth it to Howie Roseman. However, throw in the fact that Slay has a “potential out” in his contract after this upcoming season, and he’s definitely a name worth keeping an eye on around the trade deadline.
