2021 cap hit: $4.5 million

A player who everyone assumed would be cut the second the new league year began, rumors started circulating earlier this past week that the Philadelphia Eagles were interested in bringing back Marquise Goodwin on a heavily restructured one-year deal.

While that sounds nice, the veteran wideout is ultimately still someone the Eagles should wave goodbye to.

Acquired via trade with the San Francisco 49ers during the later rounds of the 2020 Draft, Goodwin was brought in to add another deep threat to the Eagles passing attack. There were concerns regarding DeSean Jackson’s ability to stay healthy for a full 16-game season, and Jalen Reagor was an unproven rookie at the time (who ended up being a below average deep threat). The trade made sense on paper, but then Goodwin opted out for the entire year due to COVID-19 concerns.

While Goodwin’s decision to forego the 2020 season is more than justified, it’s put the Eagles in a situation where they simply have no relationship/ties with the veteran WR. Dedicating even $1-2 million to Goodwin – coming off a year of complete non-action – seems like a poor allocation of resources.

Similar to Barnett, cutting Goodwin would create $0 worth of dead money. A pretty straightforward decision to make.
