Ronald Torreyes, SS

A former Yankee who actually got some game action with the Philadelphia Phillies last year, Ronald Torreyes could benefit from an inherent lack of shortstop depth this spring. Outside of Didi Gregorius, the Phillies don’t really have any other shortstops on the roster, and Torreyes was the only non-roster invitee infielder.

Girardi could in theory run the likes of Scott Kingery or Jean Segura at SS on days that Didi needs a rest, but ultimately speaking, the team could use a proper backup on the main roster.

C.J. Chatham was acquired from the Red Sox earlier this offseason, but he’s yet to even debut in the majors. Hard to put a ton of stock into him as a reliable depth option.

Torreyes has experience with Girardi back in New York, and he’s still just 28 years old. Considering the lack of general competition at the position, Torreyes likely wouldn’t have to do much to crack the major league roster.

Next. The Philadelphia Phillies could really use a bounce-back year from Jean Segura. dark

The Philadelphia Phillies have made a distinct effort to add depth this winter, which really makes this year’s Spring Training extra interesting. The competition that should ensue in the bullpen and the starting rotation should be intense, and the offense still has a handful of bench jobs that need filling.
