Backup tight end

Due to Zach Ertz having one foot out the door, the Philadelphia Eagles are also setup to be noticeably thin at the tight end position moving forward. Dallas Goedert looks like he’ll be capable of holding down TE1 duties in 2021 and beyond (should he stay healthy), but the talent behind him is barren.

Roseman and company could turn to some familiar faces like Richard Rodgers and Trey Burton this offseason, but ultimately speaking, this is a position that the Eagles have been trying to get younger at for at least a full year now.

They tried to prioritize UDFA Noah Togiai as a TE3 last offseason, but lost him to the Indianapolis Colts. Hakeem Butler was a fun experiment for a total of one target, and Tyree Jackson (former QB) was signed following the conclusion of the 2020 season.

Taking into account the fact that Nick Sirianni runs an offensive scheme similar to Doug Pederson in the sense that 12-personnel is a commonplace, having a reliable TE2 behind Goedert feels like a necessity. Someone equally as strong and physical as Goedert would also seriously aide the Eagles lacking run game.

Snagging an athletic TE in the later rounds of the draft makes perfect sense.
