Philadelphia Eagles 7-round mock draft: Trading back for a new star WR
By David Esser
The Philadelphia Eagles select…
As much fun as it was to watch Alex Singleton run around the field like a man possessed last season, the Philadelphia Eagles need themselves a true three-down MIKE linebacker, and Cameron McGrone is just that.
A redshirt sophomore out of the University of Michigan, McGrone has everything that teams normally look for in a starting-caliber, middle of the field linebacker. He’s 6-1 and 232 lbs, he’s strong, he’s a willing tackler, and he proved capable in pass coverage. Considering just how weak the Eagles linebacking core is at the moment, McGrone could easily slot in as the main starter day one.
The Eagles new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon is leaving a Colts system that had Darius Leonard to rely on at the heart of the defense. While McGrone is obviously not even close to Leonard’s caliber, Gannon needs someone he can trust as a true middle linebacker. Guys like Singleton, TJ Edwards, and Davion Taylor simply didn’t show enough last year to prove that they can handle such a responsibility-heavy role.
While there’s still some concerns surrounding McGrone’s age and overall lack of experience, a majority of mocks have him as a player who can instantly start on an NFL defense. That’s something the Eagles obviously need.
