Houston Texans: AJ McCarron, QB

With the current quarterback situation going down in Houston with the Texans and Deshaun Watson, it will be interesting to see how everything plays out and how the drama unfolds. Instead of selling the farm and moving Watson from one messy situation to another, the Philadelphia Eagles should look into bringing in another Texans quarterback.

Houston’s backup quarterback AJ McCarron has gotten a pretty raw deal in his NFL career, if you were to ask me.

Drafted as a fifth round pick in 2014 to the Cincinnati Bengals and sat behind Andy Dalton. Got a chance to start and nearly win a playoff game in 2015 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He had the game won until several dumb penalties by the defense cost him the win.

In 2017, he was nearly traded to the Cleveland Browns to be their starting quarterback, but the Browns didn’t get the paperwork in time, and the trade fell through.

Signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2018 and was competing to the starter, but suffered a shoulder injury in preseason and ultimately lost the competition. Before that 2018 season started, he was traded to the Oakland Raiders to back up Derek Carr. He was cut after that season and since then has backed up Watson in Houston the last few years.

Although he hasn’t gotten a true shot as a starting quarterback, McCarron still makes for a good backup quarterback for a team to bring in. If it’s later determined that one of either Carson Wentz or Jalen Hurts are dealt this offseason, bringing in McCarron as a viable QB2 would be a great move for the Philadelphia Eagles. He knows how to run an offense, has great work ethic and playoff experience, and wouldn’t be a real threat to the starting quarterback.

A player like McCarron would be great to bring into the locker room and quarterback room, something the Eagles need right now.
