Philadelphia Eagles: 3 players who actually won’t benefit from a new HC
By David Esser
Jalen Hurts…?
In 2020, the Philadelphia Eagles – as an organization – made a collective effort to get Jalen Hurts onto the field. Whether it was on two-point conversions, gadget plays, or even at quarterback for a handful of snaps, there appeared to be some level of agreement between the coaching staff and the front office that getting Hurts involved with the offense was a good idea.
With Sirianni now in town, I expect that to change.
The whole “two-QB offense” that the Eagles tried to employ at times was a complete and utter disaster. It rarely created big plays, it ruined the flow of the offense, and it routinely resulted in botched snaps/fumbles.
To no fault of Hurts (or Wentz for that matter), the Eagles really messed up with their assessment of two quarterbacks being valuable. By the time Hurts was named the starter for the Saints game, the coaching staff had scrapped the two-QB sets, leaving Wentz on the sidelines for the final four games of the season.
If Wentz is in fact retained as the Eagles starting quarterback in 2021, I’d expect Hurts to see a similar fate – relegated to the bench as the team’s legitimate backup quarterback. No trick plays, no lining up Wentz at WR, no Hurts coming in for random read options – nothing.
Granted, in the scenario that Wentz is traded this offseason, Hurts would likely be named the starter. In that case, I’d assume him and Sirianni would likely do fine together – but that’s a discussion for another day.
