Before people start angrily @ing me on Twitter, I’m fully aware of the Philadelphia Eagles cap situation at the moment. They’re currently projected to be roughly $70 million over the 2021 cap, leaving them in a position where it’s seemingly impossible to acquire any sort of free agent talent this offseason.

While the Eagles are definitely in a less-than-ideal spot compared to other teams around the NFL, it’s genuinely not as bad as it seems. There’s a handful of cuts/restructures that can be made right off the bat, and then from there it’s about manipulating some of the league’s salary cap rules in a way that will help Philadelphia get back under the cap threshold.

Say what you will about GM Howie Roseman – he’s a proven mastermind when it comes to working out of tricky situations like this.

With that said, the Eagles won’t be in a position to hand out any sort of lucrative free agent contacts this offseason. They’ll be bargain bin shopping for guys on one-year deals and veteran minimums, which is where a handful of ex-Colts come into play due to their close ties to the new-look Eagles coaching staff.

Five ex-Colts the Philadelphia Eagles could snag this offseason:

Marlon Mack, RB

New head coach Nick Sirianni likes to run the football – that’s been well documented over the last couple of years. He had an immense amount of success with standout rookie Jonathan Taylor this past season, and before that it was Marlon Mack who was his go-to ballcarrier.

Mack had 1,999 rushing yards and 17 rushing TDs over the course of 2018 and 2019. Despite battling injury throughout both seasons, Mack was still able to average over four yards per carry across both campaigns.

Mack tore his Achilles during the Colts Week 1 loss to Jacksonville, which has really set him up for an awkward offseason. There were already some concerns surrounding his overall durability, and now there’ll be even further questions about his rehab process.

For the Philadelphia Eagles, this is a pretty favorable type of player to buy low on. Not only will Mack’s market be fairly weak, but he’ll likely jump at the opportunity to take a one-year “prove it deal” alongside his former OC.

The Eagles desperately need another reliable RB to pair alongside Miles Sanders, and Mack needs a job in 2021 – it’s a match made in heaven!
