Philadelphia Eagles: 3 players to keep an eye on in the second round
By David Esser
Asante Samuel Jr., Cornerback
On the flip side, if the Philadelphia Eagles decide to draft a receiver with their first round pick, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the team quickly go for a CB in the second to pair alongside the likes of Darius Slay.
The son of Eagles great Asante Samuel, Asante Samuel Jr. is an intriguing prospect who could quickly fill the void at CB2 in the Eagles secondary. Although his size might scare off people initially (5-10, 184lbs), most of his college reps came with him operating on the boundary. He’s a proper outside corner, one who would allow the likes of Avonte Maddox to slide back into the slot in 2021.
New Eagles DC Jonathan Gannon was a bit of a “CB whisperer” in Indianapolis, as he was able to get the best out of the likes of Rock Ya-Sin and Xavier Rhodes, which spells good news for any Eagles CB taken in this year’s draft. While Gannon has tended to prefer taller corners in the past, Samuel Jr. plays far bigger than what his height initially suggests, and would likely thrive under the guidance of Gannon.
Samuel’s footwork and hip fluidity is already being praised by scouts everywhere – with some even suggesting that he should be a first round prospect based off these traits alone.
Ultimately speaking, the Philadelphia Eagles second round selection will rest on who they take in the first round, and (more importantly) who is still available on the board. Like we saw last year with the Jalen Hurts pick, Howie Roseman is not afraid to go against the grain with some of his early draft assets…
