Philadelphia Phillies being linked to two more big name free agents?
By David Esser
Marcus Semien
Former Oakland Athletics infielder, Marcus Semien, would also be a substantial get for the Philadelphia Phillies (if they do in fact head down that route). He finished third in the American League MVP voting in 2019, and is coming off an electric 2020 ALDS performance where he posted a 1.344 OPS against Houston.
Semien, a natural shortstop, would assumingely be the Phillies way of replacing Didi Gregorius at SS. The team doesn’t have much at the position outside of prospect Bryson Stott, and the need for a 1-2 year stopgap there is definitely prominent.
Semien’s near MVP season was a bit of a fluke compared to the rest of his major league career (career .747 OPS), but there’s definitely some level of internal belief around baseball that he’s a guy still trending in the right direction. His unfathomable postseason performance this past October only adds to the thought process that he’d be a big get in free agency.
Ultimately speaking, the Phillies’ name popping back up in free agency talks is a great sign for how the offseason may ultimately play out. Both Realmuto and Gregorius don’t appear to be out of the picture quite yet, Colome and Semien would be solid additions, and some trade rumors surrounding Boston’s Andrew Benintendi even popped up the other day as well.
All good signs at the moment.
