Oh look, another defensive lineman! The Philadelphia Eagles have obviously pumped a ton of assets into their defensive front as of late, and their frivolous spending at the position is finally starting to catch up with them. While Fletcher Cox is still one of the better defensive tackles in all of football, he has the Eagles second highest cap hit in 2021 ($23.9 million).

Cox’s current contract runs through 2022, and the Eagles would ideally like to retain their star defensive tackle past that year. Extending Cox through 2023 or even 2024 would make a lot of sense, and it would help create some short term cap relief for Howie Roseman and company.

Cox is coming off a decent enough season, one where he recorded 6.5 sacks and was selected to his sixth consecutive Pro Bowl. There were definitely instances where he didn’t look his usual disruptive self out there, and his injury total is starting to rack up. However, this is a situation where the Eagles don’t have a ton of flexibility at.

Cox would likely gladly restructure his current deal if it meant securing another couple of years of financial security, but the Eagles are going to have to be willing to commit to Cox into his mid 30s.
