Philadelphia Phillies: 3 free agent bench bats worth adding to the roster
By David Esser
Todd Frazier, 3B
The Phillies have a brooding superstar at third base in Alec Bohm, that much is obvious. However, they don’t have much in terms of depth behind the future All-Star, which is concerning considering Bohm’s shaky defense at times.
In 2020, the Phils rotated Segura in at third whenever Bohm needed a day off. They unfortunately won’t really have that luxury in 2021. Like I highlighted previously, the Phillies middle infield depth is already a concern with Didi Gregorius no longer on the roster, meaning Segura will likely have to stick at SS and 2B.
Similar to that of Holt and Hamilton, Todd Frazier is coming off a pretty bad 2020 campaign. Playing for the NL East rival New York Mets, Frazier hit just .224, posting a career worst .643 OPS. Considering the Phillies desire to keep payroll on the lower side, Frazier’s struggles (and assumed cheap asking price) would work out pretty favorably for Philadelphia.
Frazier is set to turn 35 in February, and is likely no longer seeking an everyday role in the infield. The opportunity to be a bench bat for Philadelphia, in turn getting to mentor Bohm, could be appealing to the veteran. For Joe Girardi, it gives him a savvy veteran to rely upon should Bohm see some time at first base (or DH).
