Bring in a new shortstop.

With Jean Segura hypothetically now out the door (the Phillies did reportedly shop him earlier this offseason), the need for a new shortstop is no pressing. While ideally speaking, the team could just simple re-sign Didi Gregorius, I’m going to try and be a tad realistic with this specific wishlist item.

The Phillies are definitely trying to shed salary, and it’s hard for me to imagine them bringing in Realmuto, a closer, Bradley Jr., and Gregorius.

Instead, I think the team could look elsewhere in terms of finding a one year stopgap at the position until Bryson Stott is ready to debut. Free agents like Freddy Galvis and Adeiny Hechavarria really intrigue me, as both could likely be had for under $3 million.

Obviously they wouldn’t be as productive as a Gregorius or a Marcus Semien, but they could at least be serviceable at the position for a season. Considering the way Segura has played offensively the past two seasons, it’s not a super huge stretch to say that one of the currently available low-cost free agents could actually end up being an upgrade over the before mentioned veteran.

Ultimately speaking, I’d be happy to just see one of these wishes come true this winter (preferably bringing back Realmuto!). Phillies ownership has made it clear that they want to slash payroll this offseason, so it’s foolish to get too excited. With that said, Dave Dombrowski is know to hand out money left and right, so it’s not unreasonable to think that he convinces Middleton to open up the checkbook just a tad this holiday season.
