3 reasons to be excited about the Philadelphia Phillies new-look front office
By David Esser
Offseason moves can officially begin.
Prior to the Dombrowski/Fuld/Velandia hirings, it was unclear as to was calling the shots for the Philadelphia Phillies. When news leaked that the team had begun quietly shopping Zack Wheeler, ownership seemed genuinely shocked by the information – causing questions to arise as to why guys like Ned Rice and/or Andy MacPhail were continuing to be allowed to make baseball decisions.
With a legitimate front office now in place, we now know who’s in charge, and the organization can now begin filling holes on the roster.
While it’s still unlikely that John Middleton will start cutting giant checks left and right, Dombrowski will undoubtedly demand a little bit of flexibility when it comes to constructing a MLB caliber roster. He knows he needs to overhaul the bullpen, and he knows that retaining J.T. Realmuto needs to be priority.
Dombrowski and Realmuto’s agent reportedly spoke earlier this week, which is great news in terms of improving relations between the Phillies and their free agent All-Star.
Dombrowski and Fuld are without question more equipped for the job than MacPhail and Klentak were, which hopefully means smart signings are on the way. Combining Dombrowski’s vast baseball knowledge and Fuld’s analytics background should definitely help the organization make decisions this offseason – paving the way for the Phillies to compete later down the road.
