Zach Ertz on the move.

Outside of freeing up room for Dallas Goedert’s emergence, moving off Zach Ertz this offseason clears his $12.5 million cap hit from the 2021 payroll. Considering how this past season has shaped up for the Philadelphia Eagles – this seems like an inevitable scenario.

Once upon a time Ertz was regarded as one of the best tight ends in all of football. He was routinely ranked up there with the likes of George Kittle and Travis Kelce, with plenty of people hailing him as the Eagles’ “WR1.”

However, whether due to injury, a decreased role, or overall frustrations regarding his failed contract negotiations – Ertz has fallen off pretty hard here in 2020. He’s averaging 27 receiving yards per game, and he’s only caught one touchdown.

It’s been a pretty brutal year for Ertz, and it’s hard to see the Eagles valuing him at $12+ million for the 2021 season. Goedert is in line for his own extension here in the near future, and they can’t pay both. Trading Ertz – and extending Goedert instead – just makes the most sense moving forward.

Ultimately speaking, the Philadelphia Eagles have to make more than three moves if they want to navigate out of their cap nightmare. Lots of familiar faces will be departing, and hopefully new, young players will be taking over instead.
