Philadelphia Phillies: The pros and cons of hiring Dave Dombrowski
By David Esser
Con: Lack of longterm vision
Last but not least, the hiring of Dombrowski signals a short term vision – as opposed to something that could have lasting success over the course of a decade.
When the Philadelphia Phillies inked Bryce Harper to a 13-year contract, the general thought process was that the Phils were setting themselves up for multiple years’ worth of contention. Obviously that strategy hasn’t panned out, and now it appears the organization is pivoting towards a 2-3 year window.
Dombrowski turns 65 in July, so he’s only got so much left in the tank in terms of operating as an executive, and as I’ve repeatedly mentioned, his regimes tend to leave organizations in a bit of a rough spot once he departs.
While this hiring could vault the Phillies into contention for a few seasons (which would obviously be great), the dream of this team turning into a playoff giant for the next decade is likely all but dead, especially if Dombrowski sticks to usual strategy of mortgaging the future for current success.
At the very least, Dombrowski joining the Phillies as their new President provides stability. This team has been operating completely directionless for the last 5-10 seasons, and desperately needed a new voice running things. Even with all of his drawbacks, Dombrowski provides this, and that’s reason enough to get adequately excited about the Phillies moving forward.
