Make a trade or two.

While I mentioned the fact that zero large scale moves can be made without a new front office regime being in place, the current group of executives can still make 1-2 smaller trades. Moves that are inherently low-risk/high-reward in value.

One trade that’s been reported as of late is that of Jean Segura potentially being on the move this winter. This type of trade makes an abundance of sense considering Segura’s massive salary and declining play. He’d likely fetch a handful of lower rated prospects, regardless of who’s in charge of the Phillies operations. This is a type of move that MacPhail and Ned Rice should be able to make comfortably, despite their woeful track record.

On top of that, pulling the trigger on a cheap bullpen upgrade would make a plethora of sense as well. While the team did opt to bring back Hector Neris and David Hale for the 2021 season, they’re multiple arms away from having an actually serviceable reliever room.

Landing 1-2 average relievers on affordable contracts should 100% be in play during the Winter Meetings.

Next. The Philadelphia Phillies are bringing back a handful of familiar faces for 2021. dark

Despite the virtual nature of it all, the MLB’s Winter Meetings are still a special time for baseball front offices everywhere. Moves and signings should hopefully start to pick up, and the Philadelphia Phillies rank towards the top in terms of teams that need to start acting.
