Philadelphia Phillies: 3 center fielders to potentially target in free agency
By David Esser
Enrique Hernandez
2020 Team: Los Angeles Dodgers
2020 Salary: $5.9 million
Coming off a World Series win, it’s unknown what exactly the Los Angeles Dodgers plans will be in the offseason. They could push all their chips in and try to acquire even more star power, or they could just prioritize the pieces that they already have in place. If they choose the former, hyper-utility infielder/outfielder Enrique “Kike” Hernandez would likely become expendable.
Hernandez essentially played every single position for LA during his six seasons there. He saw reps at right field, left field, center field, third base, second base, shortstop, first base, designated hitter, and even pitcher! The only position that he never actually saw time at while playing for the Dodgers was catcher.
Hernandez proved incredibly valuable to LA due to his absurd versatility, but an everyday CF job with the Philadelphia Phillies could be attractive to someone who now has a World Series ring. With Mookie Betts in town for the next decade, it’s unlikely that Hernandez will ever see starting caliber reps in LA’s outfield again.
It’s not a guarantee that the Phillies will look to add a center fielder this offseason, as they could just opt to roll with what’s already in house. Getting a long and proper look at Haseley and Moniak could prove valuable in the longterm, especially with Andrew McCutchen’s departure inevitable. With that said, a veteran addition at CF definitely isn’t out of the picture, and the above mentioned names fit the bill (barring a wild push for George Springer of course).
