DJ LeMahieu, 2B

2020 Team: New York Yankees

2020 Salary: $12 million

One scenario that we haven’t touched on yet is the possibility that the Philadelphia Phillies aren’t even looking to add a shortstop this offseason. Jean Segura was initially acquired to play SS back in 2019, and the team could totally be looking to move him back there in 2020.

Segura really struggled at the position defensively in 2019, hence why the Phillies signed Gregorius and pushed Segura over to third and second. In a perfect world, Segura should probably stay at second base, since he looked pretty good there. However, the Phillies aren’t the smartest of organizations, so they could totally just chuck Segura back to SS because why not.

If the Phillies do move Jean back to SS, targeting a big name second baseman could be in play. DJ LeMahieu would definitely be the biggest name to target, and he’s got that Yankees connection with Joe Girardi.

The Yankees are likely going to prioritize re-signing LeMahieu this winter, and it’s pretty hard to imagine the Phillies winning a bidding war with New York. However, similar to what happened with Didi last offseason, the Yankees could opt away from offering LeMahieu a contract as they fix their attention towards starting pitching.

If that does happen, the Phillies adding an infielder with an OPS of .922 during his last two seasons would be a pretty sizable addition.
