Nobody!

I’ve been alluding to it throughout the article, but there’s essentially zero guarantee that the Philadelphia Phillies sign any free agent infielder this offseason. They failed to negotiate an extension with Gregorius during the season (who’s essentially the perfect stop-gap shortstop), and ownership has already cited declining revenue as a potential hinderance to free agent spending.

As mentioned previously, the Phillis current plan could be to have Segura move back over to shortstop permanently. Despite his struggles in 2020, Kingery would then officially take over the everyday second base job. It’s definitely not an ideal set-up, and probably one that isn’t good enough defensively, but it’s likely an option that the Phillies are leaning towards.

There’s also an off chance the team tries Kingery out at shortstop given his athleticism, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens in Spring Training before we pin that as a possibility.

Instead of signing one of the above mentioned players to a short-term deal, the Philadelphia Phillies essentially get to kick the can down the road on what’s to become of their shortstop position. Is it a smart strategy? No, probably not. With that said, the smartest strategy would be to simply re-sign Didi Gregorius, their best overall shortstop since Jimmy Rollins. Fingers crossed that they can still find a way to bring the beloved Dutchman back this winter.
