5 deadline day trades that the Philadelphia Eagles should’ve done
By David Esser
Neville Hewitt, LB
Proposed trade: JJ Arcega-Whiteside to NYJ, Neville Hewitt to PHI
If Howie Roseman had no interest in swapping failed second-round WRs, sending JJAW over to Joe Douglas in New York would be another viable option. The Jets got rid of a lot of players over the last couple of weeks, and there’s little reason to believe they would’ve held on to veteran LB Neville Hewitt.
Not only is Hewitt already 27 years old, but he’s also an impending free agent. The perfect type of player for a rebuilding team to trade away.
While TJ Edwards did have himself a fairly solid game against the Cowboys last week, the Philadelphia Eagles are still noticeably lacking in the linebacker department. Their depth behind Edwards is laughable, and Edwards himself is still pretty below average in terms of pass coverage.
Hewitt on the other hand has never allowed a completion percentage of above 60% during his career, easily making him the best coverage linebacker on the Eagles.
It’s unknown just how much of a role Joe Douglas played in drafting JJAW, and if he’d even still want him at this stage in his career. However, the Jets needed WR help and Hewitt isn’t doing much in terms of helping the 0-8 Jets win football games. The swap would have made sense on paper.
If New York reallyyy wanted a 7th rounder instead, I could probably self-justify that move too.
Nevertheless, the Philadelphia Eagles opted to stay put at the trade deadline. There’s pros to this, as the team didn’t needlessly give up future draft picks. There’s also cons to this however, as the roster remains less-than-stellar.
I guess we’ll find out just how much this bye week helps the team in Week 9 when they take on the somewhat surging New York Giants.
