Philadelphia Eagles: 5 potential linebacker trades
By David Esser
Anthony Walker
Current team: Indianapolis Colts
Credit to Mike Kaye of NJ.com for tossing out the idea first, as Anthony Walker is a perfect buy-low/high-upside type candidate.
Drafted in the fifth-round of the 2017 draft, Walker showed some serious flashes during his second and third years in the league. He recorded 105 tackles in 2018 and 124(!) in 2019, along with 16 TFLs and 6 passes defensed during that two year stretch. He plays as a very stereotypical middle-of-the-field linebacker, proving decent in both run defense and pass defense.
Walker is still seeing staring-level snaps with the Colts currently, but his play has definitely slipped a bit. He’s set to be an unrestricted free agent after the season as well, making him a prime candidate to trade if the Colts feel so obliged.
Similar to that of the Cardinals, it’s hard to imagine the Colts “selling” at this year’s deadline due to their current 4-2 record, but a mid-to-late draft pick might be enough to push them off Walker. It’s not like he’s a super crucial piece to their defense, and the team’s winning record could be a bit of a mirage.
Walker is also just 25 years old, meaning a cheap multi-year extension could be in play if he did hypothetically play well for the Eagles in the second half of the season.
Throw in the fact that former Philadelphia Eagles coordinator Frank Reich is the current head coach in Indy, and there’s at least some level of connection between the two organizations. It’s an unlikely move, but one that could ultimately prove beneficial for both teams in the long run.
