The Philadelphia Phillies shutout the Washington Nationals yet again.

Coming off the back of a dominant 6-0 victory the night before, the Philadelphia Phillies were looking to capture their third straight series victory on Wednesday night. It would be no easy task, as they would be taking on former Cy Young winner and established ace Max Scherzer. Luckily for the Phils however, they had their own starting pitcher (not named Aaron Nola) who could contend with the Nationals SP1.

It was a good old fashioned pitcher’s duel for the majority of the evening, as both Scherzer and Zack Wheeler carried shutouts through the first three innings. It would be the Phillies offense which struck first however, off the bat of an unlikely hero.

Backup infielder Neil Walker hit a 2-run bases loaded single to break things open in the bottom of the fourth, capitalizing on one of Scherzer’s rare mistakes. Walker was in the lineup for Rhys Hoskins, as Hoskins was getting the night off for rest purposes, and he took full advantage of his start.

The Phillies tacked on another run in the sixth inning, as outfielder Jay Bruce launched his sixth home run of the season. Wheeler carried his shutout all the way through 6.2 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six in the process.

The Phillies saw a perfect 1.1 innings of relief from their newest reliever David Phelps, and then Brandon Workman came out for his somewhat patented “stressful save”.

Here were the three biggest takeaways from the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 shutout win over the Nats:
