Philadelphia Phillies: 3 players who need to step up for rest of the season
By Sam Wagman
Brandon Workman
Brandon Workman has only been a Philadelphia Phillie for 9 days, but you know the closer is a major part of this teams success down the stretch. I wanted to put the entire bullpen in this slot, but I feel like just noting the closer is enough.
Since joining the Phillies on 8/21, Workman has 3 saves in his 4 opportunities, which you have to admit is pretty good for our bullpen right now. Without David Robertson for the rest of the season, the Phillies will have to continue getting these types of outputs from him.
To get Workman, the Phillies sent over Nick Pivetta, who had drastically underwhelmed for the team this year, and Connor Seabold, who had impressed in the minor leagues but was better off as a trade chip for the Phils. As far as this season goes, the bullpen has been an unmitigated disaster for Philadelphia, and they need someone to calm it down.
Workman has had a good start so far, but in order for the Phillies to run deep, they will need him to find whatever gear he turned for Boston last season when he had a good year as their closer, and he will need to channel that in the red and white pinstripes.
I believe the Philadelphia Phillies can make the playoffs, win this division, and if they get a couple breaks, even win the World Series. They are seriously close, and have one of the best offenses in the league and are clicking right now. But it all comes down to their late starters outside of Nola and Wheeler, and their bullpen has to be able to hold it down. As such, I anticipate that Philly will be buyers at the upcoming trade deadline, and hopefully they add another arm, and possibly someone else that can contribute out of the pen with Robertson out for the season.
