The Rasul Douglas/Sidney Jones experiment is likely finished.

Now obviously, the Philadelphia Eagles would have preferred if both Douglas and Jones had panned out. They collectively cost the team a second and a third round pick, and the coaching staff invested quite a bit into their development over the last few seasons.

For reasons somewhat out of the Eagles control, both corners have failed to leave a noticeable impression on the NFL. Douglas simply could never figure out the speed/footwork side of things to play on the outside effectively, and Jones has been a nonstop headache with his endless string of injuries and mental miscues.

At some point, having a sure-footed veteran at one of your backup positions is simply far more valuable.

Obviously the Eagles haven’t liked what they’ve seen from their backup corners through camp thus far, otherwise Williams wouldn’t be back on the team. Bringing him in likely signals Douglas and/or Jones haven’t done enough to stick on the roster, but it also signals that the Eagles think Williams will be a legitimate upgrade on the outside. Roseman liked Williams enough to sign him last year, so that lasting affection should still be there.

It’s no guarantee, but it should only be a matter of time now before either Jones or Douglas are cut/traded (possibly both), as Williams slides in as the team’s first outside corner off the bench. For simple consistently and reliability reasons, that makes this move a noticeable upgrade for the Philadelphia Eagles.
