The Dallas Cowboys’ defense.

I’m never a fan of looking at one’s divisional opponents when trying to predict success (I’d much rather people just worry about their own team first), but in the Philadelphia Eagles case, they really only have one direct competitor: the Dallas Cowboys.

It’s been that way for awhile now, Eagles v Dallas for the division crown every year. The current *Washington Football Team* regime might go down as the most dysfunctional sports franchise in world history (although the Sixers are surely giving them a run for their money), and the Giants are treading water via the powerful thighs of Saquan Barkley’s running game.

While the Cowboys undoubtedly have one of the best offenses in the league, especially so considering the fact that they landed CeeDee Lamb in the draft, their defensive unit is really looking quite poor heading into 2020.

They lost their CB1 in Byron Jones to free agency, their sack leader from last season departed for Chicago (Robert Quinn), and they failed to adequately address their safety room, which has long been an outstanding issue on their roster.

*As I’m writing this it’s looking like Earl Thomas will be headed to Dallas, but even that’s not a huge upgrade by any stretch of the imagination. His play is majorly declining and he has serious character concerns*

The team brought in a stud DT in Gerald McCoy this offseason, only to see him get released a few weeks later due to a quad tear. Recently signed Everson Griffen bolsters up their pass rush, but is likely still a drop off compared to the previously mentioned Quinn.

The Philadelphia Eagles were successful in dissecting the Cowboys defense late last season with a  couple of traffic cones playing out at WR. Philly beat them during that crucial Week 16 showdown without DJax, without Alshon Jeffery, and without Zach Ertz. Considering it looks like Dallas’ defense got worse while the Eagles’ offense got better, we could see a similar outcome during the team’s matchups this season.
