LeSean McCoy reportedly turned down interest from Philadelphia Eagles
By David Esser
It was heavily rumored, but former Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy did not return home this offseason.
It’s no secret that Howie Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles were/are in the market for a backup running back. They reportedly just missed out on Carlos Hyde earlier in the offseason, and have been in contact with Devonta Freeman throughout the summer. One name that they were consistently linked too was of course that of LeSean McCoy, however he did end up taking his talents elsewhere.
McCoy was a bit of a stretch when it came to viewing him as serviceable backup running back. He looked good in spurts for Kansas City last year, but Andy Reid making him a “healthy scratch” during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run says a lot about him as a player. At some point, age does catch up to running backs.
McCoy signed a one-year veteran minimum to join the newly beefed up Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He cited Tom Brady and the “warm weather” as a reason for joining.

While it was reported that Howie Roseman and the Eagles did not in fact make an official offer to the veteran running back, McCoy wasn’t shy in detailing the fact that Philly did have some level of interest in him.
"“Philly was another big one that I really wanted to explore. They reached out”"
While some may view this as a substantial “miss” by the Eagles front office, clearly Roseman was only so interested. The Eagles didn’t make any sort of actual offer, and easily could have beaten out the veteran minimum deal which he signed for if they truly wanted McCoy.
It’s totally possible the Eagles roll up with Miles Sanders as a three down back in 2020, or they could be planning to give Devonta Freeman one last call now that he’s dropped his asking price. Regardless of what they end up doing at the backup RB position, Sanders will get a majority of the workload in this upcoming season.
