Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz has clearly been in the weight room this offseason.

NFL training camp is set to begin today (July 28th), and members of the Philadelphia Eagles have been arriving at the NovaCare center all week long. The team’s rookie draft class reported last Tuesday, quarterbacks arrived Thursday, and the rest of the veterans were scheduled to arrive yesterday. When Carson Wentz was filmed walking into the team’s facility on Monday afternoon, fans were quick to notice something different about their franchise QB…

Wents looks big, as in bulked up big.

Following the conclusion of the 2018 season, Wentz made a considerable effort to downsize during the offseason. He switched up his entire diet, and put a much larger emphasis on stretching and mobility. Wentz came into the 2019 season looking considerably lighter and smaller, with the goal being that the smaller frame would put less strain on his knee/back.

It’s hard to inherently disagree with the results, seeing as Wentz played all 16 games and did not suffer any serious injuries. He looked mobile and healthy all season long, and finished the year with a franchise record 4,039 passing yards.

However, the downsizing might have turned out to be a double edged blade. During the team’s NFC Wild Card playoff game , Wentz suffered a pretty severe concussion via a Jadeveon Clowney induced cheap shot.

Normally, athletes are encouraged to really bulk up to avoid head-related trauma, specifically by adding muscle to the neck area. Boxers and wrestlers have long emphasized this area of their body, and even someone like Lamar Jackson has added noticeable size since being drafted in an effort to stay healthy.

Wentz’ newfound weight gain could have simply been a result of self-quarantining or even being a new father, or it could be signaling a shift in the way he views the game. Back in 2017, Wentz was widely considered one of the biggest and strongest quarterbacks in the league. That could be a stigma he’d like to see return.

Regardless, the difference between Wentz last year and Wentz currently is remarkable to say the least. The veteran QB looks like he could play defensive end if he really wanted to.
