Carson Wentz named most valuable Philadelphia Eagle of the decade

According to PFF, quarterback Carson Wentz has been the most valuable Philadelphia Eagle since 2010.
Similar to that of MLB baseball, Pro Football Focus has a system in place where they track a player’s WAR rating (wins above replacement). This form of metric is commonly used in sports to calculate just how valuable a player is to their team’s success. During a recent post in which PFF ranked the most valuable Philadelphia Eagles of the last decade, current quarterback Carson Wentz stood at the top.
Since being drafted back in 2016, Wentz has done nothing but impress. He has amassed 1,311 completions, 14,191 yards, 97 touchdowns, and has recorded an average passer rating of 92.7. He’s won 32 total NFL games as a starting quarterback, including an eleven win season in 2017 where he was the leading MVP candidate for the majority of the year.
Despite his knee injury, Wentz still finished 2017 atop of the league in both touchdown percentage (7.5%) and quarterback rating (77.2). He was ranked as the third best overall player in football that year by his peers, and the general belief among most is that he would have captured the MVP had he not torn his ACL.
Just this past season, Wentz found himself permanently placing himself into both the Eagles’ history books and the NFL’s. Not only did he become the first Philadelphia quarterback to ever throw for 4,000 yards in a season, but he also became the first player in NFL history to do so without a wide receiver recording at least 500 yards. Throwing to a combination of tight ends, running backs, and practice squad receivers, Wentz had himself a season for the record books.
It’s no secret that Wentz has had his fair share of injury battles, as he’s failed to finish two seasons and was forced to leave his first career playoff start due to a concussion last year. However, it’s also beyond clear that Wentz has been a crucial part to the Eagles success the past few years. They are one of the few teams to have made the playoffs the last three seasons, and that’s in large part due to Wentz’ ability.
Other players who made PFF’s “most valuable Philadelphia Eagles of the decade” list included Michael Vick at #2, Nick Foles at #3, Malcolm Jenkins at #4, and Zach Ertz at #5.
Carson Wentz is entering 2020 with a revamped wide receiver room, as the front office went and found him four speedsters during the offseason. Following the four-year, $128 million contract extension that he received last year, the Eagles are undoubtedly expecting big things from their franchise QB moving forward.
