Hey Philadelphia Phillies fans: the 2020 MLB Draft is going to look a little different.

While Major League Baseball remains at a contractual impasse between the players, teams, and owners over a potential start of the 2020 season, fans of America’s pastime will soon receive a much-appreciated return of normalcy in the form of the 2020 Amateur draft.

Historically, the MLB’s draft is a laborious, weekend-long slog consisting of 40 rounds, but this year, things are going to look different. You see, with seemingly all Spring activities suspended due to COVID-19, and the Minor League systems all but shuttered this summer, teams won’t be able to stash a few dozen players across their farm system in the hopes of developing them down the line. Instead, this year’s draft will consist of five rounds over two days with the remaining undrafted players hitting free agency where they can sign with anyone for a modest sum.

This means fans can actually keep track of all five players the Philadelphia Phillies ultimately select, but also sets up a potential bidding war for players deemed good enough for a chance, but not quite ready for a fast track to the Major Leagues.

Here’s what you need to know.

When: The 2020 MLB Draft will take place over two nights, on Wednesday, June 10th starting at 7 pm for the first round, and Thursday, June 11th starting at 5 pm for rounds two through five.

Where: Like the NFL Draft, the 2020 MLB Draft will be virtual, broadcast around the world with players from around the world.

Who: Like any other MLB Draft, any high school, college, or even non-player can hear their name called. However, because of the abbreviated nature of this year’s draft, teams will probably look to MLB Draft schedule, how to watch, and general information select sure things with guaranteed paths to their roster, as opposed to players with the option to return or go to college next spring.

Needs: Unlike NFL, NBA, or NHL drafts, baseball teams don’t expect their draftees to immediately make an impact on their team at a position of need. However, after surrendering a slew of young assets last spring, chasing players like J.T. Realmuto, the Phillies could use an influx of young talent, regardless of position.

Next. Players and fans should stand in solidarity. dark
