Is Deshaun Watson a secret Philadelphia 76ers fan?

What if I were to tell you that DeShaun Watson, the starting quarterback for the Houston Texans, was a secret Philly sports fan?

Not of the Philadelphia Eagles mind you, well maybe he is, but of our fair city’s basketball team, the one, two, three, four, five, Sixers – and more specifically, The Answer himself, Allen Iverson.

While putting in work with Texans wide receiver Kenny Stills, in a move that is a total social distancing foul, Watson just so happened to be sporting a throwback number 3 jersey that I can only assume is made by another ‘Philly Special’ Mitchell and Ness. Check it out below.

Deshaun Watson to the Sixers confirmed? Is Howie Roseman’s quarterback factory preparing for a blockbuster expansion?

No. Seriously? No way! All that Watson’s attire choice means is that either 1. He is a big fan of color-coding his outfits, in which case, cool or 2. Game respects game.

While Watson and Iverson obviously don’t play the same position or even sport, the duo do actually share a remarkably similar style when they have the ball in their hands.

Like Iverson, Watson is a backyard baller who has a pension for breaking defenders’ ankles one on one and thriving outside of a traditional offensive structure. At Clemson, if Watson’s first option wasn’t open, he’d often take off running for a first down and usually more.

That unsophisticated offensive approach may be why he was the third quarterback off the board in the 2017 NFL Draft – though blame should also be heavily placed at the feet of Chicago Bears GM Ryan Pace – but as his college coach Dabo Swinney pointed out during the predraft process, ‘You don’t pass on Michael Jordon’.

See what I mean? He was even getting basketball comps from a football coach. What a world.

Now to be fair, it’s not uncommon for a professional athlete to wear jerseys from other teams in other sports, as Mike Scott has a pretty darn impressive collection of NHL jerseys he would often wear to 76ers games, so maybe Watson’s blue AI jersey was simply purchased to fit with his blue and white shorts, but that’s a rather unromantic notion, no?

Next. Trading for Blake Griffin is the worst idea ever. dark

Despite growing up in Georgia, I’d like to think Deshaun Watson is at least a big admirer of Allen Iverson, if not a total secret Philadelphia 76ers fan. Who knows, maybe when the Philadelphia Eagles play the Houston Texans at some point down the line, the man himself can sign his jersey? AI is around.
