2020 NFL mock draft: Philadelphia Eagles-only draft day-edition
If the Philadelphia Eagles go defense in the second and third round, they have to balance the scales and select either a wide receiver or a running back to make Carson Wentz‘s life easier in 2020, right?
Why not both?
For all of the unicorn-y players in the 2020 NFL Draft, from Isaiah Simmons to Mekhi Becton, Antonio Gibson may be the one best suited to add some instant excitement to Doug Pederson’s offense – especially since he very well may be available in the fourth round.
Splitting time between running back and wide receiver in the Memphis Tigers‘ offense, Gibson has great size for either position, ample power to take on defenders one-on-one, and enough elusiveness to make plays in the open field regardless of who an opposing coordinator opts to defend him with.
Gibson may never be a starter at either position, but he’s the kind of player capable of turning 100 offensive touches into 850 all-purpose yards and 10 touchdowns.
If Darren Sproles and Josh Adams had a baby, it would be Gibson – and I mean that as a total compliment.
Much like on the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles just need positive offensive yards to keep the chains moving. Gibson can do that, and create a slew of mismatches regardless of where he is lined up on the field. Heck, Pederson and Wentz could even start a play with Gibson in the slot, check the boxcount, and kick him inside to run the ball. Pair up Gibson with Wentz in the offensive backfield, run a few RPOs to confuse the offense, and watch the Eagles’ offensive virility take a major step forward.
Whether Gibson wears a number in the teens, 20s, 30s, or 80s, there’s a place for him on the Eagles’ offense.
Other options: Kentucky‘s Lynn Bowden, Oregon’s Shane Lemieux
Player comp: A Josh Adams-sized Darren Sproles
