2020 NFL mock draft: Philadelphia Eagles-only draft day-edition
Terrell Burgess is one of my favorite players in the draft.
While it may be borderline sacrilegious to go two days – and three rounds – without mocking a cornerback to the Eagles, there simply aren’t going to be any 6-foot-1 man-press cornerbacks left on the board outside of the top-100 players – maybe outside the top-40 players.
Burgess may be listed as a safety, but he played all over Utah‘s defense in 2019 as the team’s defensive leader, at free safety one play, in the slot the next, and boxed out after that, all the while serving as one of the team’s best special teamers.
With plus speed, great instincts, and an even better work ethic, Burgess looks like a future defensive leader tasked with calling out coverages, dissecting plays, and freelancing in zone coverage to prevent big plays across the middle of the field.
Fun fact: According to his Utes teammate Jaylon Johnson, Burgess would often call out plays in coverage during practice and try to line up his troops for battle even if the bullets were fake.
That’s the kind of guy the Eagles secondary is sorely missing.
Burgess may not be Malcolm Jenkins now, and may never reach his ceiling as one of the best safeties in Eagles history, but his tape is very reminiscent of Jenkins’ first run in New Orleans, when he freshly transitioned to safety from cornerback.
Other options: Washington‘s Hunter Bryant, Washington’s Nick Harris
Player comp: Malcolm Jenkins
