The Next Decade

Our list has concluded, but it’s never too early to speculate about the next decade of Philadelphia sports. Surely, our list of top athletes for the 2020-29 time frame will include some players who are either not in their respective leagues yet or may be on another team somewhere right now, but we have some very fine in-house candidates.

For the Flyers, the discussion begins with Carter Hart. If we are looking back fondly on him in 10 years, the team may have finally ended its Stanley Cup drought. If not, let’s just say that Flyers fans are used to it by now.

Current Flyers like Couturier, Travis Konecny and Ivan Provorov may also make a compelling case, depending on their career trajectories.

As mentioned, Embiid has a good shot to repeat. If he and Simmons both appear, that’d be even better. The NBA is so fickle that I can’t even hazard a guess on any other players at this time.

Simply put, Bryce Harper needs to be on this list next time, or else it will have been another failed decade for the Phillies. Nola and Rhys Hoskins could also contend, and I’m really hoping that someone like Alec Bohm makes a strong push.

Finally, the Eagles will live and die with Wentz. I don’t foresee anyone else on the team at this moment seriously contending for this list.

So if we see the likes of Hart, Embiid, Simmons, Harper and Wentz appearing here 10 years from now, it may have been a very productive decade indeed.

If not, then there’s always the next decade.
