The scariest question facing each Philadelphia sports team
Is Carson Wentz truly the guy?
More so than any other athlete in town, except maybe Bryce Harper, Carson Wentz is the most pivotal player for the upcoming decade. The Eagles’ fate will hinge almost completely on how he ultimately pans out as an NFL quarterback.
If he rockets to stardom as many expect, another Super Bowl or two will no doubt be in the offing for the Birds. But if he settles into “better fantasy quarterback than actual player” territory, then it’s going to be a frustrating time to be an Eagles fan for the foreseeable future.
I’m probably a harsher critic of Wentz than most except for Eliot Shore-Parks, who really hates him, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not pulling for him and hoping for his immense success.
Wentz shows tantalizing glimpses at times, but the only truly dominant stretch that we have seen so far is his MVP-worthy 2017 season that, of course, ended a few games early due to his knee injury.
As Wentz goes, so will the Eagles. They have committed a huge amount of money, praying that he will reward their faith. But it remains far from a sure thing that Wentz, who turns 27 at the end of this regular season, will ever reach the heights that were expected of him.
You had better believe that Eagles’ brass is well aware that literally everything depends on Wentz staying healthy and reaching elite status.
If he doesn’t, it will be a nightmare for the Eagles.
