Eagles should call Bengals over potential A.J. Green trade after benching Andy Dalton
By Dan Parzych
The Philadelphia Eagles should reach out to the Cincinnati Bengals about A.J. Green after benching Andy Dalton following Week 8.
Even though A.J. Green has yet to play a single game in 2019 due to an injury, there’s been plenty of talk surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles over whether it would be worth reaching out to the Cincinnati Bengals anyway over a potential trade.
For weeks, the Bengals have made it clear they have no intention of trading Green, and it’s easy to understand why since the wideout has proven to be one of the best in the league when healthy.
However, circumstance in the NFL can quickly change, and after hearing the news on Tuesday that Cincinnati will be benching Andy Dalton to pave the way for rookie Ryan Finley, it’s tough not to wonder if this could change their minds about a potential Green trade.
Back in the offseason when the Bengals decided to hire Zac Taylor as their new head coach, most football fans expected the team to go through a year of rebuilding, but no one expected them to still be winless heading into November.
Cincinnati may not stack up with some of the other teams in the NFL talent wise, but this Bengals teams should at least have one or two wins by now, making it easy to understand why they want to make a change at quarterback.
Dalton’s benching has absolutely nothing to do with the Eagles since the team is already set at quarterback, but if this were a sign that Cincinnati is throwing in the towel on the 2019 season, maybe a potential trade involving Green doesn’t sound so crazy after all.
Since Green seems close to returning from that foot injury after missing the team’s first eight games, most football fans can assume the wideout isn’t going to be happy with this switch at quarterback, and could even view returning to the Bengals as a waste of time.
The last thing Green should want to deal with for the rest of 2019 is being part of a Cincinnati team that is clearly going nowhere when there are plenty of other playoff-caliber teams that would welcome his services with open arms.
Philadelphia has already been linked to numerous receivers to help fill the void left by DeSean Jackson while he continues to recover from an injury of his own, and even if Cincinnati has no plans in dealing Green, it doesn’t hurt the Eagles to still reach out just in case.
