The Philadelphia Eagles acquired Genard Avery in a trade with the Cleveland Browns on Monday to provide another weapon on the defensive side of the football.

When looking at all of the injuries the Philadelphia Eagles have been dealing with on both sides of the football, most fans expected the team to be busy leading up to Tuesday’s trade deadline.

With less than 24 hours to go, the Eagles already pulled off a deal with the Cleveland Browns to acquire Genard Avery in a move that could potentially turn out to be a huge steal on defense.

For a unit that has struggled on numerous occasions to get to opposing quarterbacks throughout the 2019 season, Philadelphia had nothing to lose by adding another pass rusher in Avery.

Even though Avery only appeared in two games for the Browns prior to Monday’s trade, his rookie campaign alone displayed plenty of potential for the defensive end, and if all goes according to plan for the Eagles, he could even end up as part of the long-term plans.

Obviously, it’s difficult to look this far ahead down the road since Avery has yet to even play a single game for Philadelphia, but also this thought most likely came to mind for the Eagles before agreeing to the deal with the Browns.

As a former fifth-round pick, it was amazing to watch Avery finish his first NFL season with 4.5 sacks for the Browns after starting five of 16 games, and it will be exciting to see him suit up for the first time with the Eagles to help keep their playoff hopes alive in the NFC.

Despite how impressive it was to watch Philadelphia pull off one of the biggest surprises from Week 8 by defeating the Buffalo Bills in front of their own fans, this team still has a lot of work to do over these next two months.

Since earning one of the Wild Card spots could end up being more difficult than expected, the best way for the Eagles to earn a trip to the playoffs seems to be winning the division over the Dallas Cowboys.

And if Avery can find a way to make an immediate impact on defense by applying constant pressure each week to opposing quarterbacks, this could be one of those trades Philadelphia fans look back on to appreciate Howie Roseman even more.
