Eagles should strongly consider shutting DeSean Jackson down for remainder of 2019
By Dan Parzych
The Philadelphia Eagles could be without DeSean Jackson for a sixth game in a row during Week 8 against the Buffalo Bills.
Despite the numerous reports each week surrounding DeSean Jackson being closer to return for the Philadelphia Eagles, it’s still been frustrating for fans to watch this whole situation play out over the last month or so.
After Jackson was forced to leave the team’s Week 2 game against the Atlanta Falcons with an injury, the Eagles veteran seemed like he would only miss limited time, and return in no time to continue providing Carson Wentz with a reliable deep threat in the passing game.
Instead, Philadelphia is currently preparing for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills while Jackson started off the week of practice watching from the sidelines once again.
For the most part, Jackson’s abdominal injury has been somewhat frustrating since the decision to hold off surgery back in September seems to be backfiring, and while it’s great to hear Doug Pederson continue to claim he’ll be back soon, who really knows what to expect at this point.
Jackson can continue to put in all of the necessary work into rehab to return as soon as possible since Philadelphia has clearly been missing him on offense in the passing game, but also this is a situation completely out of his control.
Plus, if Jackson does end up returning at some point in the next couple of weeks, there’s obviously going to be some concerns over any potential setbacks.
For roster purposes, some fans haven’t held back their frustration over Philadelphia’s decision not to place Jackson on IR last month since early signs point to him missing a sixth game in a row on Sunday in Buffalo.
But with all of the uncertainty surrounding Jackson’s status since Week 2, the Eagles are reaching a point where it may just be better to shut the veteran wideout down for the remainder of the season, and go from there.
Whether they want to admit it or not, Philadelphia appears to be holding off making potential moves for another wideout with the hope that Jackson will be ready to go any day now, especially when seeing how both Mohamed Sanu and Emmanuel Sanders were traded this week.
Shutting down Jackson for the year will obviously frustrate most of the Eagles fan base since Week 1 was the perfect example of how much of a difference maker he can be, but how much longer can Philadelphia afford to wait?
Pederson even made it clear last week in a statement that Jackson won’t be 100 percent when the time does come to return, providing another example of how much uncertainty there is with this situation.
So if the Eagles made it easier for themselves to shut Jackson down, and focus on finding a potential replacement before the deadline next week, why wouldn’t they take this kind of approach?
Because otherwise, Philadelphia will only continue to hurt themselves each week by hoping for this being the time in which Jackson returns, only to continue being left with disappointment.
