Even though Brian Elliott is expected to give Carter Hart a run for the money during training camp, the Philadelphia Flyers should make the youngster their top goalie next season.

Despite coming up short of earning a trip to the playoffs last season, the Philadelphia Flyers still had plenty to be proud of as a team, especially when it came to the potential surrounding Carter Hart.

Back in 2016 when the Flyers decided to use a second-round pick on the goalie, no one really knew what to expect from Hart in the NHL.

And even though the 21-year-old still has a long way to go in regards to proving himself worthy of being the long-term answer, Philadelphia has to love what they’ve seen so far.

Last December, the Flyers watched Hart waste little time making a serious impact after he was called up from the team’s Lehigh Valley affiliate by jumping out to an impressive 2-0 start.

Sure, there were some times later in the year in which Hart experienced some growing pains that most young players go through, but this didn’t prevent Philadelphia from believing the potential was there for the long run.

With that being said, The Philadelphia Inquirer recently discussed how despite the fact that Hart deserves to be the top goalie for the Flyers heading into the 2019-20 season, veteran goaltender Brian Elliott could give him a run for the money.

From an experience perspective, it’s easy to make the case that Elliott could start off the year as the No. 1 goalie ahead of Hart since the youngster still has plenty to learn.

But also for the Flyers, if they truly want to Hart to the necessary level to become a top contender in the Eastern Conference this upcoming season, rewarding him with the No. 1 spot needs to be a priority.

The more in-game experience Hart receives, the better he’s going to get for Philadelphia, which is the most important factor of all.

Watching Hart in 31 games last year made it seem like the goalie’s future in the NHL was bright, and now that he has a little experience under his belt, there’s every reason in the world to feel excited over what year two could have in store.

Nothing is guaranteed when it comes to hockey, but at least with Hart, early signs point to the Flyers finding their top goalie of the future, so here’s to hoping these next few months consist of him earning that No. 1 spot over Elliott.
