Sean Rodriguez should use feelings towards Phillies fans as motivation
By Dan Parzych
Sean Rodriguez had a few things to say about Philadelphia Phillies fans following Monday’s thrilling win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
After an emotional roller coaster of a game on Monday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Philadelphia Phillies eventually would go on to win the game 6-5 thanks to a walk-off homer by Sean Rodriguez in the bottom of the 11th inning.
While this moment was obviously filled with excitement for a player like Rodriguez who has previously been dealing with some struggles at the plate as of late, it was the veteran’s comments post-game that are catching the attention of fans.
First off, it’s no secret that Philadelphia fans in general can be absolutely brutal when it comes to expressing how they feel towards players when they’re not coming through.
So with Rodriguez previously batting 1-for-19 in August prior to Monday’s game, it was easy to understanding the booing by fans, that is until his game-winning home run.
In classic Philadelphia fashion the frustration surrounding Rodriguez quickly converted to love since the Phillies seemed to be in desperate need of a win after losing a tough series over the weekend to the Miami Marlins.
However, the quick turn of emotions still didn’t prevent Rodriguez from calling out fans after the game, as he used the term entitled to describe the base, which oddly enough seems fair.
Still, as frustrating as Rodriguez feels towards Phillies fans, maybe he could use this as motivation to prove the fan base wrong while putting Philadelphia in better position to earn one of the Wild Card spots in the process.
It’s no secret that Rodriguez’s defense is the main reason he’s even part of the roster for the Phillies, but also previously going 1-of-19 in the month is simply embarrassing for any baseball player, and there’s no way to sugarcoat it.
With about one month to go before October baseball gets underway, Philadelphia needs all of the extra help possible just to earn a trip to the playoffs, or this year is going to look like a complete bust.
Rodriguez may not make as much of an impact as other players on a consistent basis, but Monday’s game is the perfect example of just how clutch he can be at times when the Phillies need it.
