Aaron Nola heating up at perfect time for Phillies during playoff race
By Dan Parzych
Aaron Nola helped the Philadelphia Phillies earn a huge win on Tuesday over the Boston Red Sox.
Over the last couple of years, Aaron Nola has established a reputation for himself as being the top pitcher in the rotation for the Philadelphia Phillies, and the best part is he doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
Despite a rough start to the season in which Nola failed to receive consistent run support from the Phillies on offense, the star pitcher has been on fire as of late.
Wednesday’s 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox in which Nola allowed just two runs in seven innings of work while striking out seven batters marked his fourth victory over the last five contests.
Even more impressive, this marked the second game in a row for Nola in which he topped 100+ pitches (104) before being taken out while taking some of the pressure off the bullpen in the process.
Since winning the NL East appears to be out of the question unless some sort of crazy miracle takes place over the next month or so, the Phillies are likely looking for one of the Wild Card spots if playoffs are going to happen.
Unfortunately, if the regular season were to officially end today, Philadelphia would be stuck watching the playoffs from home, meaning the team is going to need every win possible over these next couple of weeks.
As long as Nola continues to play at a high level to help the Phillies win games, there’s every reason to believe that Gabe Kapler‘s squad will end up earning one of the Wild Card spots in the National League.
But also, it’s going to take more than just Nola for Philadelphia to win games since he’s not going to be on the mound every contest, and the rest of his teammates will need to step up as well.
Nola has done an amazing job finding ways to improve his game each year, but just imagine what kind of play he would put together with an opportunity to see action in October.
All Nola and the Phillies need to do is figure out a way to earn a trip to the playoffs since the team has already proven they can compete with the best, despite their current situation in the NL East standings.
Once that happens, the rest will hopefully take care of itself for Philadelphia.
