The Philadelphia Phillies ended up improving their outfield before the trade deadline by acquiring Corey Dickerson from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Even though some fans were alright with the Philadelphia Phillies missing out on Yasiel Puig, there was still some frustration over the team missing out on what would have been a key addition to the outfield.

Between Andrew McCutchen suffering a torn ACL in early June to Odubel Herrera dealing with some issues off the field, the Phillies were arguably in need of help in the outfield.

Sure, Scott Kingery was capable of filling in, but also Philadelphia knows deep down that he’s better off filling in at third base.

With that being said, in the hours leading up to the trade deadline on Wednesday, the Phillies did end up making a key move by acquiring Corey Dickerson in a trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates, providing insurance in the outfield.

For a player coming off Gold Glove season in 2018, and was batting .317 in 43 games with the Pirates leading up to the trade, Dickerson seems like a great addition for a team in need of help to contend like the Phillies.

Despite all of the hype at the beginning of the season to be a strong contender in the National League, Philadelphia has dug themselves into the kind of hole in which every game will be extremely important during the final two months of the regular season.

Anything short of reaching the playoffs will be considered a huge failure by the Phillies this season, and while Dickerson isn’t going to solve all of the team’s recent problems, they still deserve credit for this kind of move.

Right away, Philadelphia should see an immediate impact from Dickerson in the outfield, and as mentioned before, this will also take some of the extra pressure off Kingery since he can now be used more at third base.

Plus, with Dickerson set to hit free agency in 2020, for all the Phillies know, if things work out pretty well for the remainder of this season, maybe a new contract will be in place at some point.

But instead of jumping that far ahead, the main focus for Dickerson and Philadelphia heading into August is doing whatever it takes to secure a playoff spot in the National League.
