Pirates at Phillies 2017

The Philadelphia Phillies would follow-up this performance in 2017 by being shutout at home by their Independence day rival the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0.

Philadelphia didn’t have a necessarily terrible pitching performance with starter Mark Leiter Jr pitching for 5.1 innings allowing four hits, two walks, five strikeouts, and two earned runs. Luis Garcia would come in and pitch for 1.2 innings not allowing a single base-runner while striking out two batters. Ricardo Pinto pitched two innings allowing one hit, one earned one, but got three strikeouts.

Ironically enough the Phillies put up a better hitting performance than Pittsburgh strictly based off hits with six to the Pirates’ five. Pittsburgh was simply able to get players in a better scoring position with Andrew McCutchen scoring two of the three runs for Pittsburgh with a two-run homer. This game definitely didn’t lift Philly’s spirits on the nation’s holiday.

Orioles at Phillies 2018

Finally, in 2018, the Phillies hosted the Baltimore Orioles where they were able to take the home win with a 4-1 final score.

Pitching for the Phillies was their current ace Aaron Nola who finished the game with seven innings pitched, seven hits allowed, one earned run, two walks, and nine K’s. Victor Arano would pull off a two-inning closing duty without allowing a single run or hit while striking out three batters.

Jorge Alfaro was able to push in an RBI, and Carlos Santana scored on an error for the Phillies first scores of the day to go up 2-1 in the fifth. Nick Williams actually provided the Phillies with half of their offense hitting a two-run homer in the seventh which took the one-run lead and pushed it into a more secure territory.

In the past decade, the Phillies have a record of 6-4 while playing on July 4th. This year they will travel to Atlanta to play the Braves in a game that truly matters as the Phillies try to scratch and claw their way back into first place.

Next. Phillies should be embarrassed over J.T. Realmuto being lone All-Star for 2019. dark

Do you think the Phillies can win this Independence day or will they get blown up like the white house in 1996?
