Philadelphia Phillies: Fourth of July ten-year recap
Phillies at Marlins 2011
The 2011 season treated the Phillies quite generously early on, arriving with their best record of the past three years at this point in the season with 54 wins.
The Phillies took a trip to Florida for the fourth to face the Marlins in a 1-0 victory behind seven strong innings from Vance Worley. In those seven innings, Worley sent six batters back to the dugout with K’s and only let up two hits while allowing just two free bases.
The bullpen also gave two noteworthy innings with Michael Stutes and Antonio Bastardo not allowing a single hit. The only run would be batted in by center fielder Michael Martinez. Although not the best team performance a one-run shutout was certainly a pleasant part of the Independence day night for Phillies fans.
Phillies at Mets 2012
The following year the Phillies would find themselves in New York in another holiday bash with their rival Mets and once again Philly would come out on top but with a 9-2 win this time. Not only were the bats impressive scoring nine runs but the pitching was on par only letting up the two runs.
However, that wasn’t the looks of it from the start of the game with the Phillies being held scoreless until the seventh where they would score three runs each in the last three innings. Of course, the pitching was so impressive due to the talented Cliff Lee being on the mound, going eight innings with nine strikeouts. Jonathan Papelbon came in to close the game out and did so without a single base-runner.
On offense, three players sent the ball into the stands, Chase Utley, Carlos Ruiz, and Ty Wigginton being the three. Meanwhile, Jimmy Rollins and Hunter Pence also had RBI’s on the day. Unlike the last time the two teams met on July fourth the Phillies were fighting to get back on top of the division with the Mets holding a secure lead.
