Bamboo magic finally wears off for Phillies in loss to Marlins
By Dan Parzych
The Philadelphia Phillies knew the luck of the bamboo was going to wear off at some point, which it did on Friday in a loss to the Miami Marlins.
Back on Monday, Brad Miller was hoping to help bring some luck to the Philadelphia Phillies since the team was in desperate need of any help possible after suffering a seven-game losing streak.
Talent wise, there was no excuse for a team like the Phillies to struggle the way they did during that losing streak since this group was supposed to be a serious contender in the National League.
This may still very well be the case for Philadelphia since there’s plenty of time remaining in the regular season, but also the last thing the Phillies want to do is play catch up with their rivals in the Atlanta Braves.
So how did the good-luck charm of bamboo work out for the Phillies this week? Well, as baseball fans know, Philadelphia looked like a completely different team from the previous weeks against the New York Mets by winning all four games against their division rivals.
Even more impressive, some of those wins happened to take place in dramatic fashion, whether it was overcoming a 4-1 deficit on Wednesday or simply the five runs scored in the ninth inning on Thursday to secure a 6-3 win.
All of a sudden, the team that appeared to be sinking fast was putting themselves in better position for the NL East race, and Phillies fans were having a blast getting on board behind the unexpected luck this bamboo was bringing to the table.
Then Friday night took place, as Philadelphia seemed to be in a favorable matchup against the Miami Marlins with Vince Velasquez on the mound, only to watch it all go downhill once again.
With all due respect to the Marlins, it was embarrassing to watch the Phillies fall 6-2 the way they did since the offense looked like a complete joke similar to a way from their previous losing streak.
Obviously, Philadelphia and their fans knew the magic behind the bamboo was going to run out at some point, but it would have been great to see the impressive play at least continue into Friday since, as mentioned before, the matchup seemed almost too perfect.
By sitting 5.5 games back of the Braves heading into Saturday’s contest, the Phillies need every win they can get moving forward in order to keep things interesting in the NL East.
Otherwise, not even all of the bamboo in the world will be able to help Philadelphia, and it will be difficult to come up with the proper excuses if they fail to reach the playoffs, but there’s no reason to think with this kind of mindset just yet since it’s only end of June.
