Even though Klay Thompson to the Philadelphia 76ers seemed like a long shot, it was still a fun scenario to think about.

While Jimmy Butler continues to seem to be the top target for the Philadelphia 76ers in the upcoming free agency period, some fans couldn’t help but wonder about the possibility of Klay Thompson somehow ending up on the team as a backup plan.

As one of the best shooters in the league, Thompson knew it would only be a matter of time this summer before receiving a hefty pay raise with a new contract, whether it was on the Golden State Warriors or another team.

Obviously, Thompson seems like the kind of player who would prefer to stick around Golden State since the team is always a serious contender in the Western Conference for a reason, but also there was no way of knowing what the Warriors would offer.

Even after suffering a torn ACL in the NBA Finals, there was never really any doubt over the interest surrounding Thompson since in the long run, it would still be worth considering.

With that being said, no matter how exciting it was to think about the possibility of Thompson joining a Sixers team on the rise consisting of young stars in Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid, this scenario was always going to be a long shot.

And now that reports are coming out over Golden State’s plans to offer Thompson a maximum contract, it looks like any slim hope for Philadelphia can officially be laid to rest.

In reality, no Sixers fans should really be all that upset over this news since there was never any official interest on Thompson’s end about coming to Philadelphia, and this was more so a dream over how great of a fit he would be in the starting lineup.

With all due respect to J.J. Redick since the veteran has done an unbelievable job over the last two seasons, but there’s no question that Thompson would be the much better option if the Sixers were to compare.

Philadelphia fans only need to wait a few more days before the madness of free agency gets underway to see what kind of moves the team ends up making, especially when it comes to Butler.

But at least with this recent news surrounding Thompson expected to receive a hefty offer from the Warriors, there’s one less option for Sixers fans to speculate about to turn the crazy down a little bit.
