The Philadelphia Eagles can afford to play without Darren Sproles in 2019 when looking at their current running back situation.

Ever since the Philadelphia Eagles were eliminated from the playoffs in January, one of the biggest questions surrounding the team was whether Darren Sproles would be back in the picture for the 2019 season.

From his blazing speed to small size that makes it difficult for opponents to tackle at times, Sproles has proven to be quite effective for the Eagles over the years when healthy.

But unfortunately, the keyword from that sentence is “when healthy” since the fact that Sproles has been limited to playing in just nine games over the last two seasons shows how difficult it’s been for both parties.

With Sproles being one of Doug Pederson‘s favorite players to coach, the argument can be made this is the only reason the veteran was even part of the picture still during the 2018 season.

It would be one thing if Sproles had little trouble staying healthy, and made a huge impact on a consistent basis each time he stepped foot on the field, but this has been far from the case in Philadelphia.

Over the last few months, there’s been plenty of speculation over whether Sproles would actually retire this offseason or if he would give it one final shot in 2019.

Originally, the plan seemed to be that Sproles would call it a career after last season, but since he wouldn’t commit to a decision, it seemed like the desire to play was still there.

However, just because Sproles has expressed interest this offseason over the possibility of playing another year in the NFL doesn’t necessarily mean the Eagles are committed on him returning for a sixth year with the team.

Even with the recent news surrounding Sproles working out for what appears to be to make sure he’s ready to go for the 2019 season, Philadelphia should know deep down they would be just fine without him part of the picture.

At the end of the day, Pederson and the Eagles realize their current situation consisting of a solid group of players at running back such as Jordan Howard and Miles Sanders will be the much better option.

As bad as it sounds, bringing Sproles back would only take away minutes from other key players who will put Philadelphia in better position to win games in 2019, so here’s to hoping the Eagles don’t give in by signing the running back leading up to training camp.
