Flyers fans need to give Cam York a chance following 2019 NHL Draft
By Dan Parzych
The Philadelphia Flyers selected Cam York with the No. 14 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft on Friday.
To say last year was a season to forget for the Philadelphia Flyers would be a huge understatement when looking at all of the factors that worked against them.
Between moving on from both Ron Hextall and Dave Hakstol to coming up short of reaching the playoffs, the 2018-19 season was filled with plenty of crazy drama for the Flyers, but at least there is hope for next year.
After originally landing the No. 11 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, all eyes were on Philadelphia to see which prospect they would select to put the team in better position to compete during the 2019-20 season, and hopefully reach the playoffs.
Turns out, the Flyers would trade down a few spots with the Arizona Coyotes to No. 14, and with the selection, they would end up selecting a defenseman in Cam York.
Right away, there were plenty of mixed reactions surrounding the decision by Philadelphia to select York, mainly because some fans didn’t believe the team needed another defenseman, and should have focused on other needs.
However, the Flyers never would have felt confident enough in trading down a few spots to land York if the potential wasn’t there, and since he was considered one of the top defensive players from this year’s draft class for a reason, fans need to give this pick a chance.
For all Flyers fans know, York could one day develop into the kind of defender Philadelphia needs to re-emerge as a serious contender in the Eastern Conference.
Keep in mind there’s a reason why York was considered to be one of the top defensive prospects from this year’s draft class, and despite the frustration from some Flyers fans over the pick, the defender deserves a fair chance.
For a team that continues to have high expectations every year to be considered a top playoff contender, Philadelphia can use all of the help possible moving forward after coming up short this past season.
York may need some time to develop into the star player the Flyers hope he can be, but after landing the defender in the draft, this seems like a decision that will pay off for the best in the long run in Philadelphia.
