Making a case for the Philadelphia Phillies’ 2019 All-Stars
By Jake Starr
Rhys Hoskins
Rhys Hoskins would be in the tier higher if it was not for all the talented first basemen in the National League. It is extremely unlikely that Hoskins will be voted a starter, so his best hope comes in making it as a reserve.
Hoskins is looked at very highly by many around the league, but considering only three first basemen make the team, it will be tough for him to crack the roster. Josh Bell‘s recent resurgence does not help Hoskins’ case either, so he may need a big hot streak to make the All-Star team.
Hector Neris
What a past year it has been for Hector Neris. After struggling much for the first half of 2018, Neris was sent down to Triple-A, but after a brief sting there, Neris has looked like a totally different pitcher. He can thank a resurgent split-fastball for that.
So far this season, Neris has a 1.90 ERA and is a perfect 10/10 in save opportunities. We all know the last time a Phillies pitcher was perfect in saves, and that same pitcher made the All-Star team that season (where he actually blew the save).
It’s always tough for a reliever to make the All-Star team considering a lot of the relief innings go to starting pitchers, but if Neris continues to dominate opposing teams, then he could be making a trip to Progressive Field very soon.
